About Steve Logan
Steve Logan is the man behind K-Star Thai Boxing Academy and the WMTO. Everyone
knows about the fantastic success of his promotions at the Tower Ballroom and
the York Hall are some of the best around but not too much is known about the
man himself. To try to find out more we recently spoke to him.
WMTO: Steve, not too much is known about you. We know what a great instructor you are
but have you ever fought Thai Boxing yourself?
Steve Logan: Yes I have, because of my career as a professional
wrestler I started quite late and had my first fight at 26 years of age. Because
there were no Thai Boxing gyms in Birmingham at the time Paul Sutton and myself
had to set up our own gym so that we had somewhere to train. So I was actually
still Wrestling when I first started Thai Boxing and it was a little difficult
to fit everything in but, even so, the fights that I did have I was unbeaten and
won the BTBC Midland area cruiserweight title by K.O. so I did quite well.
WMTO: You said that there were no Thai Boxing gyms in Birmingham, so how did you
learn?
Steve Logan: Well I’ve been involved in martial arts since I was 8 years old, so I’ve
got 27 years experience behind me. But Paul and I used to travel to Manchester to train
under Tony More and to London to train with Nick Stone who lives in Australia
now. We set up the first ever Thai Boxing gym in Birmingham and we learned a lot
things ourselves by experimenting.
WMTO: Is it true that you were taught by Bob Spour?
Steve Logan: No. Paul and I had a club before Bob started teaching in Birmingham. A few
people have asked me that, but I don’t think that he would say that himself
because he knows it’s not true. People must just assume Bob taught me because I
hadn’t had as much publicity as him.
WMTO: Do you and Paul Sutton still run a gym together?
Steve Logan: No, we split up about many years ago and now he has his own gym.
WMTO: Do you still train yourself?
Steve Logan: Yes in both Thai Boxing with my champions and Wrestling and weight training with
some very promising young wrestlers, Stuart Johnson and Mark Lamas.
WMTO: Why did you set up the WMTO?
Steve Logan: Because I was sick of not seeing Thai Boxing get the exposure that it deserved.
I didn’t like the fact that to get a Thai Boxing title Thai boxers had to fight
for kick boxing titles like the WKA. And I was annoyed when I saw people who
didn’t deserve title fights getting them and those that did not getting a
chance. To quote a famous saying "I kept thinking that somebody should do
something about it." Then I realised that I was somebody, so I did something! I
started the WMTO and I think that I have done a good job so far because if you
look at our ratings lists, all of the WMTO champions are very strong at their
level. Only recently two people fought for a WKA area title and both of them had
been beaten and stopped by people who had earlier fought for the WMTO title and
on the 8th February we have two WAKO pro-British champions fighting for WMTO
English titles so obviously our titles are more credible.
WMTO: What are your plans for the WMTO?
Steve Logan: Just to keep getting stronger, to remain credible and to keep giving people the
opportunities that they deserve. We welcome anyone that wants to help Thai
Boxing to grow.
